Roofing & construction · Peak District
Family-run, second generation. Natural slate, stone slate, clay tile, lead, flat roofing, solar — and the rest. If it goes on a roof, we do it, specified properly and guaranteed in writing.
Why roofs fail up here
At 1,000 ft, Buxton is one of the highest market towns in England. What passes as a fine specification in the valleys gets taken apart by a Peak District winter. Four things drive nearly every failure we get called to.
Most of the High Peak sits in BS 5534 exposure zone 4–5. That changes headlap, batten gauge and fixing spec — every slate mechanically fixed, not nail-and-hope. Get it wrong and rain tracks uphill under the covering.
We get 60–80 frost days a year. Porous concrete tiles and soft bricks take on water, freeze, and delaminate from the face. It is the single most common reason a 30-year roof only lasts 18 up here.
Rubble-filled stone walls and softwood structures move. Rigid mortar bedding cracks, ridges lift, valleys open up. We dry-fix ridges and hips as standard and re-point in a lime mortar that flexes with the building.
Inside the Peak District National Park and its conservation areas, replacement usually has to be like-for-like — reclaimed stone slate or natural slate, matched coursing, matched ridge. We source it and handle the specification.
What we do
We are a full roofing contractor. Complete re-roofs, flat roofing systems, leadwork, roofline, chimneys and structural alterations, all carried out by our own directly employed tradesmen — and yes, we still do repairs, properly. We came up through the heritage side, stone slate and lead, and we are fully qualified on the modern systems too.
Strip, structural check, breathable membrane, new battens and covering. Scaffold and skips arranged as part of the job; building control sign-off handled on request.
Warm and cold deck build-ups with the falls designed in, not chased afterwards. Insulation upgraded to current Part L on every re-cover.
Our own lead welders. Chimney flashings, valleys, box gutters, bay tops and full lead flat roofs, all to Lead Sheet Association detail.
Rebuilds, re-leads, new pots and cowls, and full removal with structural make-good where a stack is redundant.
Fascia, soffit, guttering and dry verge in UPVC or timber, with the ventilation actually calculated for the roof void rather than guessed at.
Dormers, loft conversions, Velux installation and loft insulation upgrades, taken from drawings through to building control.
Raked out properly and re-pointed to whatever joint the building wants — weather-struck, flush, bucket-handle or recessed — in sand and cement, or a breathable lime mortar on older stone and anything listed. Chimney stacks, gables, parapets, full elevations, ridge and verge bedding. Where a wall is taking driving rain we finish with masonry cream: it makes the face water-repellent without sealing the wall up, so the stone can still breathe.
Beyond the roof
Through vetted partner contractors we also take on scaffolding, house extensions and new-build shells. One point of contact, one programme, one invoice — you are not chasing five trades yourself.
Choosing a covering
Straight numbers, no sales patter. Minimum pitch matters because a covering laid below its rated pitch will let water back regardless of who fits it — and up here, weight and porosity matter as much as price.
| Covering | Service life | Min. pitch | Weight | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stone slate | 100+ yrs | 30° | 90–150 kg/m² | Listed and National Park properties; like-for-like reclaimed gritstone |
| Natural slate | 80–100 yrs | 20° | 25–35 kg/m² | Most Peak District houses; Welsh or Spanish, light enough for old structures |
| Lead flat | 100+ yrs | 1:80 fall | 30–45 kg/m² | Bay tops, porches, valleys and anywhere you want it done once |
| Plain tile | 60–80 yrs | 35° | 65–78 kg/m² | Steeper traditional roofs; clay outlasts concrete in frost |
| Interlocking tile | 40–60 yrs | 17.5° | 45–52 kg/m² | Budget-conscious re-roofs and shallower pitches; fastest to lay |
| GRP fibreglass | 25–30 yrs | 1:80 fall | 4–6 kg/m² | Dormers, extensions and garages; seamless, no joints to fail |
| EPDM rubber | 25–35 yrs | 1:80 fall | 2–3 kg/m² | Large single-span flat roofs laid in one sheet |
| Torch-on felt | 15–20 yrs | 1:80 fall | 5–8 kg/m² | Outbuildings and short-term budget repairs |
Service life assumes correct specification, adequate ventilation and Peak District exposure. Concrete tiles at the bottom of their range are almost always frost damage, not age.
Instant guide price
Give us the footprint of the building and the covering you are after. We will work the true roof area off the pitch and give you an honest range — the same one we would give you on the phone.
Your guide price
A guide only. Every roof we price is measured on site — access, structure, existing timbers and the state of the stonework all move the number. The written quote is fixed, itemised and free.

What customers say
Several reviews, every one of them five stars. These are lifted straight from our Google profile — there are more of them over there.
Tom and his team have just finished a complete re-roof on our property. A huge task undertaken in unforeseen weather conditions. The lads stuck at it from the start and we now have a great looking roof. Thanks to Tom, who went above and beyond to make sure we were always OK.
MCG carried out a roof repair on the fascias of my house, fixing roof end caps. Throughout their time, the three staff and owner were all very polite, professional and carried out quality work. They left the premises very tidy, sweeping up after themselves.
We have just had a new roof fitted by MCG Construction Group. It looks great and we are very pleased with it. Len, Tom and the team did a great job. They worked hard, they left the area very tidy at the end of each day, and they always let us know what was happening.
Surveys & reports
Homebuyer reports flag a roof and tell you to "consult a specialist". We are the specialist. You get a written PDF with photographs, a defect list and what it will cost to put right.
Everything from ridge to ground level, written up as a PDF report you can hand to a surveyor or a solicitor.
You know where the leak is. We find out why, and tell you what it takes to stop it for good.
Already know the scope, or working from an architect or surveyor specification? The quote costs you nothing.
Where we work
Buxton, the High Peak and the Derbyshire Dales are our patch and we know every stone of it. That does not mean we stop at the county line — if the job is right we will travel for it, so ask wherever you are.
